The Indian Premier League has already given some nervy moments with a number of matches going down the wire. Batsmen are already lighting up the stadium through their performances while the bowlers are not missing an opportunity to impress the spectators.
The IPL presents an opportunity to the Indian players to impress the selectors so that they come to the notice of them and maybe get an opportunity for the national side. The likes of KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Nitish Rana, Krunal Pandya have already presented their strong cases with a lot of matches still to come in the tournament.
However, former India captain and selector Kris Srikkanth are already impressed the way KL Rahul and Ambati Rayudu are playing this season. Rahul has already recorded the fastest IPL half-century in the history of the IPL while Rayudu played a superb inning of 79 runs against Sun Risers Hyderabad to win the game for his side.
Opening and number 4 slot should go to Rahul and Rayudu
Talking about their performances, Srikkanth, in his column written for TOI felt that even though both the batsmen are performing well, they have not got the due credit. “What connects the two-stroke players is that both of them have not got their due, despite being stellar with the bat,” read the column.
Srikkanth felt that both Rahul and Rayudu are as good as anyone for the opening and number 4 slot for India in the shortest format. “If the current edition of the IPL is any indication, then India might have just unearthed two men to fill in two important slots: opening and number four. These two get the job done as effectively as anyone else,” wrote 58-year-old Srikkanth.
Srikkanth credited Kings XI Punjab for trusting Rahul as the opener and the batsman has delivered for them. Talking about Rayudu’s performance, Sri Kanth felt that Rayudu has always been ready to do what the team asks him too. He was asked to open where he did well and then again suddenly was dropped down the order but did well there as well.
Srikkanth felt that Rayudu’s knock against one of the best bowling unit of the IPL speaks quality of his batting. “This just goes to show how much hinges on Rayudu. The one-match brilliance of some of his team-mates might have pushed Rayudu back on the popularity charts, but he brings in consistency,” wrote Srikkanth in his column.
