The Indian team started their tour of the United Kingdom (UK) with a couple of resounding victories against Ireland at Malahide Cricket Ground in Dublin. However, their main test lied in the limited-overs series against England in their own backyard. In the first T20I in Manchester, Kuldeep Yadav’s masterclass with the leather followed by a stupendous knock from KL Rahul guided India past the finishing lineup.
The Karnataka-batsman also became the second batsman from the country with two centuries in T20 cricket. His maiden ton came in a losing cause against the Windies in 2016. In the second match in Cardiff, he perished cheaply followed by another lacklustre knock at County Ground in Bristol. Prior to the UK tour, the conundrum surrounding Rahul’s batting-position sparked.
While the 26-year-old came at No. 3 in T20Is, he has been batting in the middle-order in the 50-overs format. In the first match at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, he didn’t have much to do as India’s top-order scored most of the runs. Liam Plunkett picked him up in the second match at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London for a two-ball duck. He would wish to end the series with a significant score under his belt.
Rahul’s new journey
Virat Kohli, the Indian captain, has had a decent run thus far in the UK tour. The Delhi-born cricketer was dismissed for single-digit scores in Dublin. He came back to play a couple of short, yet useful knocks in the T20Is, one of which came in a run-chase when the Men in Blue were chasing 199 in Bristol to win the series. In the first ODI at Trent Bridge, he scored 75 runs and was nipped out against the run of play.
The 30-year-old batsman scored 45 runs at Lord’s and looked ominous to take the match away from the home team, but was trapped plumb in front by Moeen Ali. The three-match ODI series is currently level at 1-1 and both Rahul and Virat need to step up in Leeds. Meanwhile, Rahul enjoyed a train journey with his captain and Anushka Sharma, Virat’s better-half.
He had a gala time with one of the most celebrated couples in the cricketing fraternity. Subsequently, he took to Instagram and posted a picture along with the lovebirds and also Hardik Pandya, who was seen sitting on the seat in between Anushka and Rahul. He wrote “Loved the train journey today with these amazing people”
