KL Rahul has been fined 15 percent of his match fees for showing dissent towards the umpires after his dismissal on day three of the fourth Test against England at The Oval.

The Indian opener was dismissed after edging a James Anderson delivery on 46. After an initial not-out call, the decision was overturned after a review from the England players, with replays showing an edge off the bat. The incident happened in the first session on day three at The Oval.

Rahul was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

One demerit point will also be added to Rahul’s disciplinary record as it was his first offence in a 24-month period.

The decision was made by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Illingworth, third umpire Michael Gough, and match referee Chris Broad. Rahul accepted the charges levelled by the officials and therefore, there was no need of a formal hearing.

India lead England by 171 runs at the end of Day 3

Rahul’s knock helped India get off to a solid start, as they lead England by 171 runs ahead of day four, leaving the contest deliciously poised. Indian opener Rohit Sharma oozed class out in the middle on Day 3 and scored a marvelous 127. Cheteshwar Pujara offered good support to Sharma and scored a 127-ball 61.

And, it was the 153-run stand between the two men that paved the way for India to finish Day 3 at a commanding 270/3, and the Virat Kohli-led outfit currently leads by 171 runs with 7 wickets intact. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja are the two overnight batsmen who will resume the fight against the England bowling attack on the morning of Day 4.

While Kohli is unbeaten on 22, having faced 37 deliveries, Jadeja survived 33 deliveries and scored 9 runs. The five-match Test series between England and India is currently level at 1-1.
