The Pakistan cricket was jolted with the news of the spot-fixing yet again. The much awaited second edition of the PSL went underway recently. However, within two days of the commencement of the tournament, the news of spot-fixing broke out and the cricket fraternity in Pakistan was shattered yet again. Pakistan internationals Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were sent back home for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing and according to reports, PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan had stated that they have strong evidence against the southpaw.
In recent turn of events, as per the quotes in Indian Express, the PSL Chief Najam Sethi has confirmed that they knew about the spot fixing prior to the commencement of the tournament. They were in a spot of bother whether to announce it before the tournament or wait for the matches to be played. Sethi revealed that Sharjeel Khan did exactly what he had promised to the bookies.
“We knew what commitments they had made. Islamabad United played Sharjeel but not Khalid. But when the match was held it was confirmed Sharjeel had done what he had committed to do to the bookmakers. We were not sure whether to make the announcement before the PSL began as we feared it could hit the event or after the match but we decided to wait and see what happened in the match and than we sent them back. We were worried how the whole thing could affect the PSL and its reputation but we took a decision which we felt was right,” said Sethi.
He further noted that the board is keen on having a strong hold on the match fixers. The board is keen on adapting a strict action or course of steps for the alleged players involved in match fixing. He credited the Anti Corruption Unit of Pakistan for being swift in their actions.
“Yes the ICC’s ACU was also aware of everything but credit goes to out ACU which followed up the whole issue thoroughly and came up with enough material and evidence to charge sheet the players and send them back home,” he added.
