Know more about the pickle juice Cheteshwar Pujara was having to fight cramps
Pujara batted for over 450 balls in the Test match and was constantly struggling with cramps.
India batting star Cheteshwar Pujara once again proved his worth by playing two sublime knocks in the ongoing first Test against Australia in Adelaide. In a game where most of his teammates struggled to get going, the right-handed batsman batted like a man on a mission. He had trouble with cramps but played through it to take the team into a position of strength.
In the first innings, India were in deep trouble after being reduced to 41 for 4 when he came to the rescue. The situation further weakened when Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant also departed cheaply. However, Pujara held firm from one end, playing out nearly 250 balls to score one of the finest knocks of his career. He was eventually dismissed after scoring 123. As a result, India recovered from a disastrous start to post a respectable 250.
Even in the second innings, Pujara starred with the bat, top-scoring once again for the visitors. The Saurashtra star scored 71 and shared crucial stands with skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to guide India to a competitive total. Once again he batted more than 200 balls for his runs to really tire down the Aussie bowlers.
What makes Pujara’s battle in Adelaide even more precious was his constant battle with muscle cramps. And it was a ‘Pickle Juice’ that helped him cope with it. The Indian No.3 however, had a tough time swallowing the juice as his facial expression revealed it all.
Here is a video of Pujara struggling to swallow it:
Pickle juice a great remedy for cramps
Researchers have proved that pickle juice is highly effective to fight cramps. Many athletes drink it before and after working out because of the high electrolyte content due to sodium. The juice helps relieve muscle cramps and fatigue.
Pickle juice can become effective at relieving muscle cramps in less than a minute and a half, not only because of the sodium but how quickly it can be absorbed by the body. The absorption is helped along by the calcium chloride and vinegar. The juice helps the players maintain the sodium level in their bodies which rules out cramps to a certain extent. As a result, it has become very popular among athletes across the globe.
First Test finely poised
Meanwhile, India have set Australia a target of 322 to win the game. At one stage, it looked like the visitors would something in excess of 400. However, they lost their last 6 wickets for just 59 runs to be all out for 307 from 248 for 4.
