Rohit Sharma is the new captain in the shortest format of the game for India. As Virat Kohli continues to lead the team in Tests and ODIs, India are all set to split the captaincy duties. Former Pakistani batsman Salman Butt recently shared his views on the same.

The discussions of split captaincy and its effects started right after India were knocked out of the ICC T20 World  Cup 2021. Their performance in this tournament were lukewarm as they lost against Pakistan and New Zealand and seemed rather clueless against them.

However, Rohit Sharma starts his tenure as India’s full-time T20I captain with a lot of reputation. He already has a lot of achievements as a leader. Besides, Rohit and Kohli share a great bond.

“You cannot deny possibility of conflict but chances are very low” – Salman Butt on India’s split captaincy

Salman Butt felt that the chances of a dispute between Rohit and Kohli seem very unlikely. He spoke about the same during his Q&A session on his YouTube channel. On being asked about the issues that may arise between the duo due to split captaincy, Salman Butt said:

“Whenever there are two different individuals, it (conflict of opinion) is possible, but their domains are different. One is leading the T20 side and the other the ODI and Test teams. They have played some very good cricket together and I haven’t heard of any issues between the two. I think mostly they are in-line and they understand each other.”

He also spoke about how both of them are intelligent individuals. “They know their domain. So if they work within it, there shouldn’t be any problem. On many issues, their thinking is likely to be parallel because they have been captain and vice-captain.

So the think tank is the same and they must be taking decisions as a combined unit. You cannot deny the possibility of a conflict but the chances are very low.” he said. Thus, it will be exciting to see the dynamics between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli post the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 as well as how they preform the captaincy duties in respective formats.
