Kohli proving to be outstanding batsman of his era: Greg Chappell
Kohli, who is the world’s No.1 batsman in Tests and ODIs, has also become India’s second most successful captain in Tests after defeating England at Trent Bridge.
He did not have a pleasant stay in India during his stint as their national team coach but that hasn’t discouraged former Australian captain Greg Chappell to sing a paean for Indian captain Virat Kohli. The 70-year-old former cricketer, who was recently in Bengaluru to attend a friend’s textile workshop, complimented the Indian for his batting as well as leadership skills.
Kohli, who is the world’s No.1 batsman in Tests and ODIs, has also become India’s second most successful captain in Tests after defeating England at Trent Bridge. He has shown quality performance both as a batsman and captain and looks on his way to eclipse every other batting and captaincy record that lies ahead.
Kohli’s partnership with Rahane at Trent Bridge was decisive
“Kohli is proving to be the outstanding batsman of his era. His with partnership Rahane in the first innings was the decisive period of play during the Trent Bridge Test match,” Chappell was quoted as saying by Mumbai Mirror. The former Aussie captain, however, is not the first retired cricketer who thinks the Indian captain is the best batsman of his generation. Former Australian captain Steve Waugh and former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara also feel that Kohli has in it to become India’s best batsman of all time.
The 29-year-old is in a magnificent form in England, scoring 440 runs in three Tests. He has belted two hundreds and two fifties in six innings he has played and by far the highest run-getter in the series for both teams. At Trent Bridge, he registered a crucial 159-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings which proved to be decisive in the end.
He also hit a ton in the second innings to help India reach a strong position and force a win. Kohli has scored 200 runs in a single Test on two occasions in this series and now has scored the most number of 200 or more runs in a Test that his side has won. That record has even put the legendary Don Bradman and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting behind him.
