Kohli will soon smash Dravid and Gavaskar’s records in England: Virender Sehwag
The current Indian captain has also inched closer to those two former greats in terms of tons in Tests.
Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag feels Virat Kohli will go on to smash the record of most runs in a single Test series in England by an Indian batsman in the current series. Former captains Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar currently stand ahead of Kohli with 602 and 542 runs scored in a single Test series in England but the current skipper already has 440 runs in his kitty in three Tests and have two more to go.
Sehwag, however, feels that neither Dravid nor Gavaskar would feel unhappy if Kohli surpasses them in this series. The current captain has also inched closer to those two former greats in terms of tons in Tests. He has 23 centuries in the longest format, tied with Sehwag, and has only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Dravid (36) and Gavaskar (34) ahead of him.
Dravid & Gavaskar will be happy
Speaking on IndiaTV’s show ‘Cricket ki Baat’, Sehwag said: “It’s not a danger to the greats (Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar). Instead, it’s a news of immense happiness if someone is about to break their record. It’s similar to the joy I felt when Karun Nair became the second triple-centurion for India after me. Gavaskar and Dravid too would feel the same way if and when Kohli breaks their records. I myself want him to do so because it will mean that he scores runs which in turn would culminate in India winning the series.”
India and England will meet for the fourth Test at Rose Bowl, Southampton, from August 30. The visitors are trailing 1-2 after three games and will be eager to win the final two to register one of their biggest triumphs in a Test series abroad. Kohli will be a key man if India have to succeed in their mission. He has scored two hundreds and two fifties in this series so far and has aggregated 200 runs twice in a single Test.
“He made 97 and 103 in the last Test on a bowler-friendly pitch and therefore when he gets favourable batting conditions in the next two Tests, we can expect him to score not just a ton but a double-century. He has already hit 6 double hundreds in a year. So I expect him to score a double hundred and even possibly a triple as that is the only thing missing from his CV,” Sehwag, India’s only batsman to score two triple centuries, said.
