Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan have been going through a legal tussle since March. The cricketer’s wife accused her husband of extra-marital affairs, domestic violence, match-fixing and delivering death threats. The case went to such an extent that Shami’s future as a cricketer also came under the clouds. His annual contract was withheld by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The Committee of Administrators (CoA) and the Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) investigated on the matter and to Shami’s delight, he was given a clean chit on the match-fixing allegations. He was also awarded a Grade B contract. The Bengal speedster also went on to play for Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL), the stint of which also became uncertain.
More trouble for Shami
Recently, it has been learned a court in Kolkata has directed the cricketer to appear before it on January 15 in connection with a cheque bounce case filed by his spouse. Alipore Judicial Magistrate Md Zafar Perwej, the in-charge of the chief judicial magistrate court on this day, said that failure to attend the same may even lead to the player’s arrest as per reports in Times of India (TOI).
Earlier, Jahan filed the case under NI Act after Shami stopped the payment of a cheque which he had presented to his wife for monthly expenses. After the dispute earlier this year, they have been residing separately. He was earlier asked to attend the court in October, but he couldn’t. The CJM directed him to appear to court on Wednesday, but he wasn’t available that day too.
Sk Salim Rahaman, Shami’s lawyer asked the judge to allow Shami to appeal through the counsel, but the judge reverted by saying that the law is the same for everyone. Not being able to attend the same may also result in the issuance of an arrest warrant against Shami.
