The Indian squad for the ICC World Cup 2019 was announced on 15th April and since then cricket experts and former players have analyzed the 15-member squad to death figuring out what will be the best playing XI and batting combination. This World Cup will also probably the last one for Indian batsman-keeper MS Dhoni.
Dhoni has won all the three ICC Trophies in World T20 in 2007, World Cup in 2011 and Champions Trophy in 2013, being the only captain to do so and this makes him one of the all-time greats of the ODI game. Former India captain Kris Srikkanth also feels that Dhoni is the best option they have in the team to bat at no.4, adding a new angle to the already extensive discussion.
There isn’t anyone ‘better suited’ than MS Dhoni
“For long, the No. 4 position has been much debated and frankly, I think too much has been made about that. In my opinion, India has a readymade No. 4 in MS Dhoni. I don’t think there is anyone better suited for that slot than the former skipper himself and why he has not been allowed to bat there consistently remains a mystery,” Srikkanth wrote in his Times of India column.
Srikkanth was the selector in chief when India last won the World Cup in 2011, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, who will be appearing in his fourth world tournament. Dhoni averages a healthy 56.58 at No.4, scoring 1358 runs in 30 innings, with a strike-rate of 92.82 and with Indian team management trying a handful of batsmen at the spot which included Ambati Rayudu and Vijay Shankar being the latest one.
Dhoni was not played at no.4 position during the Indian tours to Australia and New Zealand in early 2019. The selectors have shown faith in Shankar to bat at the spot after his performances against Australia and New Zealand both away and at home.
