Kuldeep and Chahal grabbed their opportunities: MSK Prasad
Now, with Chahal and Kuldeep performing exceedingly well in overseas conditions as well, where does the road go for the seniors?
Indian wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are enjoying some serious success in South Africa at the moment. They have fittingly taken over the crown of being India’s spin twins from Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin. It was not very long ago when the Chief Selector of the Indian team, MSK Prasad, had faced severed criticism for overlooking Ashwin and Jadeja.
The fans had lashed out him for picking Chahal and Kuldeep ahead of Ashwin and Jadeja. Now, the two young wrist spinners have justified their selection and MSK Prasad is proud of their achievement. As per the recent quotes in Sportstarlive, the selector remarked that the idea was to increase the pool of spinners in the national side.
And hence, the selectors picked Chahal and Kuldeep. The duo bagged their opportunities and kept performing well to reach the point where they are at the moment. He is glad that they lived up to the expectations.
“It’s really heartening to see an Indian cricket team dominate overseas, that too in South Africa. When they were picked, it led to criticisms but with all due respect to everyone, we wanted to bring in variety in the spin bowling department,” quoted MSK Prasad.
“We wanted to increase the pool of spinners, as in the base, like we have done with the batting and seam bowling department. It is a process and they are doing well with every game against all teams. I am glad that it paid off and I am looking forward to seeing them perform consistently against the best sides,”
On Ashwin and Jadeja
It is worth noting that the pair of Ashwin-Jadeja had also enjoyed similar success in the Indian conditions. But they often failed to live up to the expectations on the overseas soil. Now, with Chahal and Kuldeep performing exceedingly well in overseas conditions as well, where does the road go for the seniors? Answering this question, MSK Prasad remarked that the focus should be on Chahal and Kuldeep as they are performing at the moment.
“There is always a chance. As I said, we wanted to have a base of spinners and in the process, we gave opportunities to Kuldeep and Chahal, which they grabbed. Right now, it makes sense to continue with them for sometime and then analyse the future,” quoted the Chief Selector.
