After a disappointing loss in the Test series, Team India is facing the hosts in a six-match ODI series, the first one of which is currently in progress at Kingsmead, Durban. The Indians are completely in the game after the first half and will feel they have a strong case to win the first match after restricting the Proteas to 270 runs.

On winning the toss Faf du Plessis decided to bat first, and once again the bowling side gained control of the proceedings. Irrespective of the common understanding Virat Kohli went into the game with two spinners along with his fast bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Bumrah got them an early breakthrough with Hashim Amla walking back to the pavilion after being caught plumb in front of the wickets with 30 runs on the board. After Amla’s departure, the captain Faf du Plessis himself took charge of shaping the innings. But to his dismay, the team kept losing wickets at the other end.

The Proteas missed their key batsman AB de Villiers who will not play the first three matches due to a finger injury that he sustained in the third Test match. As Faf stabilized the innings, Yuzuvendra Chahal picked the wicket of Quinton de Kock. Like they’ve done so well for India in the recent past, the wrist-spin duo pulled things together for the team. In their spell, Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav took 5 wickets giving away just 50 runs.

Kuldeep as his second wicket got rid of JP Duminy at a very crucial stage while he was in the process of rebuilding the innings along with du Plessis. He played for the ball that would spin away but it was a wrong un a deceptive one and did the job perfectly for the chinaman as it breached past the gap between the bat and pad, slid on to hit the leg stump.

Duminy’s wicket was followed by another wicket that of David Miller and Yadav finished with three. The Indian spinners did it all right and the South African batting did not have enough answers to the challenge wrist-spin pair posed.
