Kumar Dharmasena goofs up during the 2nd ODI
Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena is in the news following a poor umpiring decision during the limited over’s game between India and England. The 2nd ODI between the two sides turned out to be an eventful contest as both the sides scored well over 350runs, producing a run feast with India winning the game by just 15 runs.
During the 47th over of the England innings when Liam Plunkett decided to make use of the DRS after being given out lbw on-field off the bowling of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Kumar Dharmasena, the third umpire found himself in hot waters. As the asking rate was going sky high, the batsman walked across and tried to tip the ball but ended up completely missing it.
The umpire ruled him out after a good look but the batsman wasn’t convinced and he immediately reviewed as he felt he had walked across and the impact was made outside off stump. The blunder took place when Dharamsena asked the on-field umpire to stick with the original decision- that is out.
During the referral, he said “(when Ultra edge showed up) Nothing there. Just roll back for me to confirm again. I can see clear daylight between the bat and the ball and you can go to ball tracking when it is ready.”

To Dharmsena’s relief, the decision was finally changed and the correct call was made. Plunkett remained unbeaten on 26 off 17 balls, courtesy five boundaries. For India, it was Ravi Ashwin who picked up figures of 3/65, whereas Bhuvneshwar Kumar proved to be pretty economical, going for only 63 runs in his quota of 10 overs, and picking the lone wicket of dangerous Moeen Ali.
A.K Choudhury (India) and RSA Palliyaguruge (Sri Lanka) were the two on-field umpires. England had earlier won the toss and asked India to bat first on a pitch that looked high scoring.
Twitterati enjoyed his blunder and there were tons of tweets fired in:
