Kumar Sangakkara impressed with the technical alterations made by the Indian batsmen
He seemed happy by the application showed the Indian batsmen.
The Indian batting faltered miserably in the first two Tests against England at Edgbaston and Lord’s owing to which they comprehensively lost both the matches. Subsequently, they also went 0-2 down in the five-match series. However, after being put in to bat by the Three Lions, India ended the first day’s play at Trent Bridge in Nottingham with the score at 307/6 in 87 overs.
Most importantly, they breached the 300-run mark for the first time in the Test series. The likes of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane flourished with the willow. They notched 97 and 81 runs respectively to bail India out after Chris Woakes reduced them from 60/0 to 82/3 in a space of eight overs. They cobbled together 159 runs and guided their team to a commanding position.
You must give credit to the work
The stand was broken by Stuart Broad in the final session of the day. In the meantime, Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman, seemed impressed by the application showed by the Indian batsmen while mentioning that the conditions weren’t as taxing as in the first two matches. Moreover, the 40-year-old put forth the technical changes made by their batters.
“Conditions at Trent Bridge were not as taxing, the pitch is a bit more easy-paced, but the Indian batsmen adjusted extremely well to facing the English bowlers after the first couple of Tests. They tightened up their technique with the way they defended the ball – they played it a lot later than before, left it better than before,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying in Sky Sports.
“They also drove the ball with more extension rather than flourish and put the bad deliveries away. You must give credit to the work they have done between Lord’s and here, allowing India to build partnerships, particularly Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s 159-run stand for the fourth wicket,” the former cricketer added.
