With India’s middle-order troubleshooter KL Rahul at the helm, Kings XI Punjab is set to start their IPL 2020 voyage against Delhi Capitals at Dubai International Stadiums. The Punjab franchise, just like Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, has been tagged ‘underachiever’, with zero IPL titles to its name.
The Mohali-based franchise has secured the bottom place twice in its last five years and their last memorable IPL stint came in 2014 when they paved their way into the finals. However, they failed to cross the finishing line, losing the title against Kolkata Knight Riders by three wickets.

The team had finished sixth last season under the leadership of Ashwin but after his departure to the Delhi franchise, Rahul is expected to lead the side from the front. The team management has trusted the Karnataka lad to convey his recent form into KXIP’s IPL 2020 safari in UAE conditions.
Ahead of their IPL 2020 season, KXIP made impressive buys in the form of James Neesham, Ishan Porel and Chris Jordan. After making three smart purchases, head coach Anil Kumble snapped up Glenn Maxwell for a staggering INR 10.75 crore.
With Rahul-Gayle duo at the top and Maxwell-Neesham duo in the middle, KXIP hold the ability to give any IPL side a run for its money. ‘Universe Boss’ Gayle can turn the tide at any point of time while Maxwell can smoke sixes for fun in the death overs. They also have the likes of Mayank Agarwal and Nicholas Pooran to conceal any batting flaws of the side.
KXIP skipper KL Rahul vying to script history on UAE soil
One of KXIP’s strengths will be their diverse bowling attack. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Sheldon Cottrell, after plying their trade in the recently-concluded CPL 2020, will be hoping to deliver on the UAE tracks. While Cottrell had a lacklustre CPL season, Mujeeb scalped 16 wickets in 11 outings and finished as the second-highest wicket-taker.
Along with Mujeeb, KXIP also has youngster Ravi Bishnoi, who had hogged headlines with his performance in the Under-19 World Cup. Along with a robust top-order batting force, KXIP also possesses a lethal pace attack. Along with India’s mainstay Mohammed Shami, KXIP have the likes of Jordan, Porel and Cottrell in their arsenal.
After having an impressive stint with the national side, Rahul will have an uphill task of guiding KXIP to their maiden IPL trophy this season. Kings XI Punjab flagged off their IPL 2020 campaign against Delhi Capitals at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 20th.
