Akhil Rajput, the son of former Indian cricketer Lalchand Rajput, is set to make his debut for Mizoram in the forthcoming domestic season. He was drafted in as one of Mizoram’s outstation players in the men’s senior squad. Nine new teams were previously added to the 28 current teams, out of which six were from the north-eastern region of India, Mizoram is one of them.

The Cricket Association of Mizoram, along with Akhil, also roped in Punjab all-round cricketer Taruwar Kohli, who has played alongside Indian captain Virat Kohli in the 2007-08 U19 World Cup and Sinan Kader from Karnataka. In the meantime, Mamon Majunder, the General Secretary of CAM updated about their new inclusion and sounded confident about the 26-year-old.

I am sure he will provide the Mumbai touch

“Akhil had sent his biodata. We were impressed with him. Our office-bearers highly recommended him. Even Taruwar has been a fantastic player for his state,” Majumder was quoted as saying in Sportstar on Tuesday.

Lalchand Rajput also expressed his delight after his son found his place in the Mizoram team. “I am really happy that Mizoram has taken him. I am sure he will provide the Mumbai touch, the khadoos attitude to the team,” Rajput mentioned.

Rajput is currently the head coach of the Zimbabwean national cricket team. Previously, from 2016-17, he was the head of the Afghanistan cricket team and under him, the Asian team grew leaps and bounds. Rajput’s next assignment will be Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh in October and November.

They are scheduled to play three ODIs and a couple of Tests from October 21 to November 15. Recently, Zimbabwe played a T20I triangular series, also featuring Australia and Pakistan. They couldn’t win a single match and followed it up with five consecutive defeats against Sarfraz Ahmed’s men in the ODI series at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
