Lancashire skipper bats with a shin pad on his left-arm against Yorkshire
Livingstone's enthusiastic approach didn't go unnoticed.
Lancashire hasn’t had the best of times in the ongoing county championship as they are languishing at the sixth position of Division 1 in the tournament with only 73 points from their nine matches. To add to their miseries, their captain Liam Livingstone broke his thumb during Lancashire’s match against Yorkshire in Manchester. Subsequently, he came to bat with a shin-pad on his left-arm during Lancashire’s run chase.
The injury occurred in Yorkshire’s first innings. He couldn’t bat in the first instance owing to the injury as per reports in The Cricketer. Lancashire was bowled out for 109 runs in response to Yorkshire’s 192 all out in 57.1 overs. Barring Alex Davies, no other batsmen could put up a fight. Steven Patterson’s men thereafter racked 239 runs courtesy of Harry Brook and Johnny Barstow’s half-centuries.
Livingstone’s brave act
Chasing 323, Lancashire found themselves in dire straits after having been reduced to 110/5 in 31.5 overs. Jos Buttler and Tom Bailey pulled the team out of the pits with a stand of 80 runs. The partnership was broken by part-timer Joe Root when he nipped out Buttler in his very first over. The next three wickets of Graham Onions, Matt Parkinson, and Tom Bailey fell in quick succession.
With one wicket remaining and Lancashire needing 119 runs, Livingstone came to bat with the broken arm and with precautionary measures as well. Previously, he was seen practicing with one hand. He didn’t get to bat as Root dismissed James Anderson. The English Test captain castled the fast-bowler to bring the curtains down on the match. Root was brilliant with the leather as he picked up four wickets.
Lancashire may have lost the match, but Livingstone’s enthusiastic approach didn’t go unnoticed by any means, He is now expected to stay out of cricket as he recovers from the injury. Lancashire’s next match is scheduled against Surrey on August 19 in London.
