Lesson learnt is Bangladesh are no pushovers: Trevor Bayliss

Bangladesh made a strong statement when they beat England in the 2nd ODI on Sunday. The visitors surely received an alarming call not to take the Asian nation for granted. A 34-run win for Bangladesh has now made the Chittagong ODI the decider. The 2nd ODI also took an ugly turn when the players were involved in a heated exchange. England coach Trevor Bayliss is very well aware of the situation. He recently came out in support of his team at the press conference.

Speaking on the incident, he cited that it is the human nature to get provoked. “I don’t encourage it but that is human nature. The way in which we react and what we might say in those heated situations is what the ICC are trying to crack down on and rightly so. It is in front of a worldwide audience and we are all there as role models for the young kids coming through,” he said.

Bayliss backed skipper Jos Buttler and spoke in his support. He went on to quote that if altercations happen on the field, some players will not back down. He also pointed out that such things are pretty normal on the cricket field. “It is not the first time we have seen it in international cricket and probably won’t be the last,” said Bayliss.

“Don’t forget there are always two teams in this type of argument and some of the teams around the world are not quite as pristine as they might like to make out. We are not going to back down from anything and certainly we have some characters in the team who will not back down,” quoted Trevor Bayliss.

He further added that he did not read the report on Buttler but knows the skipper will handle the situation with maturity. “I haven’t read the match referee’s report but they were fined and Jos was warned for retaliating and that in itself tells a bit of a story. I think Jos wearing the captain’s hat was not going to take it lying down,” quoted the 53-year old England coach.

He also maintained that the skipper needs to be a little more careful and ideally watch his actions. Speaking further on Buttler, Trevor Bayliss quoted, “You only have to watch some of our pre-match football matches to see the passion he has got. I have no qualms about the passion he shows. He has to be a little more careful about how he reacts. He gets respect for that as well from the rest of the guys. It is a case of just watching what he says and the way he reacts.”

He also mentioned that the intensity certainly goes high in the subcontinent. The cheering crowd and the buzzling atmosphere can get to the nerves. “I think when playing in the sub-continent with the crowds and the heat and that type of thing some of these things can get out of proportion a little bit,” said the England coach. However, he said that the team has to make sure that they do not distract themselves after the incident. “We have got to be on the look out to make sure it does not distract us from the way we want to play the game and concentrating on what we do,” pointed Bayliss.

All-rounder Ben Stokes was also involved in a shoulder barging incident with Tamin Iqbal at the end of the game. Stokes also took to Twiiter to show his disappointment. Commenting on Stokes’ involvement, he said that Stokes stood up for his team mates. “Stokesy to his credit was the one trying to get clarification on what they [Bangladesh] actually meant. It was not directed at him personally but he was the one standing up to his team-mates,” said Bayliss.

England will take on Bangladesh in the final ODI of the 3-match series at Chittagong. Trevor Bayliss is very well aware of the importance of the game. He affirmed that the team will not be affected by the incident. “It is a deciding game. I don’t think that incident in last game will have too much effect. They are professional players. They have all been through it before. I think if anyone gets caught up in that type of thing I think it will be an advantage to the other team,” cited Bayliss.

He also rightly asserted that Bangladesh are definitely not a pushover team anymore. They have been a stunning form since March last year. Their home record has been phenomenal. “The lesson from both games is that Bangladesh are no pushover. They have a very good team, a very good bowling attack playing in home conditions. A number of the teams have found out over the last 12-18 months they are no push-over. A lot of teams will be reassessing how they approach matches against Bangladesh in the future,” conceded coach Trevor Bayliss.
