Liam Plunkett responds after a fan says the English pacer bowled 'sh*t' in 2019 World Cup final
35-year-old Plunkett plucked 11 wickets during England's victorious campaign at the mega-event.
14 June 2020 marked the first anniversary of England’s World Cup triumph. The Eoin Morgan-led side, thumped New Zealand by the narrowest of margins in the 2019 World Cup, to bask in title glory. After the thrilling encounter was tied in super over too, England were crowned the world champions on the basis of boundary count rule.
Talking about England’s bowling expeditions in the final of the showpiece event, pacer Liam Plunkett was impressive on the crucial day as he scalped three including Kane Williamson’s wicket. 35-year-old Plunkett plucked 11 wickets during England’s victorious campaign at the mega-event.
However, a few weeks ahead of the much-awaited Test series against West Indies, the pacer came to know from social media that he was dropped from their 55-member training squad.
“I think that’s what it is. I appreciate it’s a sport, at the highest level, and new people are always coming in but do I still think I’m good enough to play for England? Of course. But that ship has sailed and I’m not a person to hold grudges. I’m trying to get on with the next thing at Surrey,” Plunkett, as quoted by The Guardian, had said post his axe from the side.
Following Plunkett’s omission for the West Indies Tests, a fan on Twitter opined that the pacer did well for England but it was time to move on. Despite Plunkett dismissing Williamson in the 2019 World Cup final, the fan felt that the pacer had bowled some ‘long hops’ (short-pitched deliveries), making the job easier for the batsmen. Plunkett also hit back at the criticism by tweeting, “Only 50% of the time”.
Liam Plunkett has been also considering USA move
Plunkett, who has donned the England jersey in 13 Tests, 89 ODIs and 22 T20Is, was also interested in shifting his base to the USA where his wife resides. However, if Plunkett wants to play for the USA, he will have to serve a mandatory three-year residency period in the country to meet the eligibility criteria first.
“I want to play for as long as I can for Surrey. Hopefully, that’s another three years. Then it’s three years to qualify for the US. “I might not even get into their team and I think I’d prefer to develop as a coach. But who knows? I might still be flying in at 42,” Plunkett had said about the prospect of shifting his cricketing journey to the USA.
