Former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds passed away at 46 having met with an accident about 50 kilometers outside Townsville on Saturday (May 14) night (Australia time). He was one of the most flamboyant cricketers to have played the game and the whole cricketing fraternity was in shock to hear the news. Symonds was more than just a cricketer who faced a lot of controversies outside the game but had always given his 100 percent on the field, whether it came to batting, bowling, or fielding.

Primarily, a middle-order batter, Symonds played all three formats for Australia but his position in the longer format wasn’t always guaranteed like in the shorter formats. He made his international debut in 1998 and went on to play 26 Tests, 198 ODIs, and 14 T20 internationals for the country until 2009. More importantly, Symonds was part of two World Cup-winning campaigns for the Australian side that dominated the cricketing world.

Andrew Symonds’ all-rounder role in Australia

Symonds was one of the saviours for the Australian side whenever wickets fell early and he averaged more than 39 in all the formats he played. He also turned up with the ball whenever the team needed him to, even if it was medium pace or off-spin, and he was one of the masters in effecting direct hits. A gun fielder inside the circle, Symonds was always a significant threat for the batters while sneaking a single and he was insanely fit during his cricketing days.

Symonds was a man of controversies as well and a lot happened in his career including the Harbhajan Singh monkeygate incident in 2008, and anti-disciplinary issues. His rift with Michael Clarke during his last playing days was a talking point for a considerable time and it did not end in his favour.

However, Symonds has given a lot of memories to the cricketing fans to cherish which will always remain etched, having played some incredible knocks in his playing time. Symonds managed to score six centuries in ODIs, and two in Tests and he always had the fight against the bowlers during the tough time.
