2019 turned out to be a special year for Rohit Sharma as he topped most batting charts in ODI cricket and scored runs in all formats of International Cricket. He had a record-breaking World Cup 2019 where he struck five centuries. Rohit came up with three hundreds in four innings during the Test series against South Africa when he was promoted up the order. He ended the year with most runs (1490), hundreds (7), fifty-plus scores (13) and fours (146) in the ODI format. Rohit also scored three International tons more than any other player in 2019 and finished only 13 fewer runs than Virat Kohli.
All the major stats and records which Rohit Sharma created in International cricket in 2019:
1 – Rohit Sharma became the first player to score twin centuries in his maiden Test as an opener when he opened for the first time in this format during the Vizag Test against South Africa. His 303 runs in that game are also the most by any player in their first Test match as an opener. He went past Tillakaratne Dilshan’s tally of 215 runs which he recorded during the 2009 Galle Test against New Zealand.
2 – Rohit became only the 2nd player to hit three consecutive centuries in the World Cup. Kumar Sangakkara had four hundreds in a row in 2015 edition. Rohit also became the 2nd Indian with a hat-trick of ODI tons after Virat Kohli (vs West Indies in 2018 at home). Sharma is also the first player to score three consecutive ODI hundreds in England.
3 – Three out of Rohit’s five tons in the CWC19 came while chasing. He thus became the first player to score three centuries in the history of World Cup while chasing. In this process, he also became the first player with four centuries while chasing in ICC ODI tournaments (CT and CWC).
5 – Rohit became the first player in World Cup to hit as many as five tons in a single edition. He went past the record held by Kumar Sangakkara with four hundreds in the 2015 edition.
5 – Rohit’s five tons in the World Cup also made him the first player to score five tons in an ODI series/tournament. He is overall only the 2nd player to hit five hundreds in an International series/tournament. Clyde Walcott of West Indies scored five centuries during the 1955 series against Australia.
6 – The Indian opener equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in the World Cup. Both the Indian batsmen hit six centuries a piece in the history of the tournament.
7 – Rohit had ten centuries in International cricket in 2019 which came against seven different opponents. He thus became the first player to score hundreds against seven different oppositions in a calendar year in International cricket.
He struck hundreds against South Africa, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka during the CWC 2019 and an ODI ton each against Australia at the start and against West Indies at end of 2019. Rohit also struck three Test tons over the South African team at home.
7 – The Indian opener struck seven ODI centuries in 2019 which are the joint 2nd most ODI tons by any player in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar had as many as nine centuries in 1998 while Sourav Ganguly and David Warner hit 7 tons apiece in 2000 and 2016 respectively.
7 – Rohit became the first player with seven consecutive fifty-plus scores on Indian soil in Test cricket; a streak that spread between 2016 and 2019. Everton Weekes (1948/49), Rahul Dravid (1997/98) and Andy Flower (1999-2000) had six consecutive fifty-plus scores in this format.
8 – Rohit’s 159-run knock in Vizag was his 8th 150+ score in ODI cricket; two more 150+ scores than any other player in this format. It was also Rohit’s 3rd 150+ ODI score against West Indies which made him the first player with three 150+ scores in ODI cricket against an opponent.
9 – Sharma also became the first Indian opener to score centuries in all three formats in International Cricket with his 176 in Vizag against South Africa. He is also one of the nine players to score a century in all International formats while opening the innings.
10 – Rohit Sharma became the first player in International cricket to smash ten centuries in a calendar year while opening the innings. Sachin Tendulkar in 1998, Graeme Smith in 2005 and David Warner in 2016 scored 9 tons each as openers in International matches.
13 – The 13 sixes hit by Rohit in the Vizag Test match are the most by any player in a Test going past Wasim Akram’s 12 sixes during the 1996 Sheikhupura Test against Zimbabwe. Rohit also became the first player with 6+ sixes in both innings of a Test as he hit six sixes in the first innings and seven in the second innings of that match.
Rohit also became the 1st Indian with 10+ sixes in a Test and is also the first player overall to hit 10+ sixes in a match in all three International formats.
15 – Rohit became the first Indian to complete a double century in Test cricket by hitting a six when he raised his double ton in Ranchi Test against South Africa. As many as 13 players before Rohit completed their Test 200s by smashing a six. Later, Mayank Agarwal joined this list in the Indore Test against Bangladesh.
19 – Number of sixes hit by Rohit during the 3-match Test series against South Africa; the most by any player in a Test series. He went past Shimron Hetmyer’s 15 sixes during the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh which was played in 2018.
20 – The Indian limited-overs vice-captain had 20 scores of fifty-plus in International cricket thus year; the most by an Indian opener in a calendar year surpassing Virender Sehwag’s 18 fifty-plus scores in 2008. Overall, Rohit’s 20 scores of 50+ runs are the joint 2nd most by an opener in a calendar year across all International formats.
Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record with 21 fifty-plus scores while Saeed Anwar and Gary Kirsten also had 20 scores of fifty-plus in International cricket in 1996 and 2000 respectively while opening the innings.
28 – Rohit Sharma is one of the five players and only the 3rd Indian to score 28 centuries in ODI cricket. Rohit has hit 26 of those while opening the innings; the 4th most ODI hundreds by an opener.
41 – With his twin tons in the Vizag Test, Rohit became only the 2nd Indian to score twin centuries in Test cricket as an opener and the first to do so in the last 41 years. Sunil Gavaskar struck twin centuries as an opener three times in Test cricket between 1971 and 1978.
78 – Rohit has struck a total of 78 maximums in International cricket in 2019. These are the most International sixes by any player in a calendar year. Rohit broke his own record which he set in 2018 with 74 sixes also by surpassing the 65 sixes he hit in 2017.
104 – Number of T20I appearances for Rohit Sharma; he became only the 2nd player to feature in 100 International matches in Men’s T20I cricket after Shoaib Malik (119) during the Rajkot T20I against Bangladesh.
191 – The 33-year-old has hit a total of 191 sixes in International cricket in India. These are the most number of International maximums by any player on Indian soil surpassing MS Dhoni’s 186 sixes.
410 – During the Mumbai T20I against West Indies, Rohit became the first Indian and only the 3rd player over to smash 400 sixes in International cricket. 338 out of 410 sixes hit by Rohit in Internationals came while opening the innings. Only Chris Gayle (527) hit more sixes in Internationals as an opener than Sharma.
648 – Rohit Sharma amassed 648 runs in the 2019 World Cup and ended the tournament as the leading run-getter. His 648 runs are the 5th most by any player in an ODI series/tournament and the 3rd most in a single edition of World Cup.
Only Sachin Tendulkar (673 in 2003) and Matthew Hayden (659 in 2007) had more runs than Rohit in a World Cup but played two matches more. Rohit’s 648 runs are the most by any player in the league stage of an ODI tournament.
1490 – Rohit finished 2019 with 1490 runs in the ODI format; the 8th most runs in ODI cricket by any player in a calendar year. Since the start of 2001, only Matthew Hayden (1601 in 2007) scored more ODI runs in a calendar year than Rohit.
2442 – Rohit finished the year with 2442 runs in International cricket; all as an opener. These are now the most runs in International Cricket by an opener in a calendar year. He went past Sanath Jayasuriya’s 2387 runs as an opener for Sri Lanka in 1997.
