List of records Virat Kohli created with his century in the Perth Test against Australia
Here we look at all the major records and numbers that Virat Kohli created during his 123-run knock.
The onus was once again on Virat Kohli for rescuing India with the bat after India were reduced to 8/2 in response to Australia’s 326 in the second Test in Perth. The Indian skipper ensured that they did not succumb under pressure and added valuable stands with the middle-order. Kohli made a 257-ball 123 with 13 fours and a six helping India to get past the 250-run mark. His innings was cut short after edging one into slips off Pat Cummins for the second time in this series.
Here we look at all the major records and numbers that Virat Kohli created during his 123-run knock:
Kohli’s riches in Australia:
10 – Virat Kohli’s century is his 10th International ton in Australia; the most by any visiting player. He thus went past England Jack Hobbs and David Gower who have scored nine centuries apiece.
6 – Number of Test tons for Kohli in Australia; the joint 3rd most by a visiting player. England’s Jack Hobbs and Wally Hammonds struck nine and seven Test tons in Australia apiece. Kohli is tied with Sachin Tendulkar for most Test tons among Indians in Australia.
4 – Kohli’s four out of six Test tons in Australia have been scored while leading the team. These are the joint-most number of three-figure scores for a visiting captain in Australia. Clive Lloyd also has four Test tons as captain in Australia but after playing 21 innings more than Kohli.
Kohli climbs captain charts:
34 – Kohli has 34 centuries across all formats in International cricket as captain which are bettered by only Ricky Ponting. He moved ahead of Graeme Smith (33) with the century in the Perth Test.
Kohli among the quickest:
127 – Innings Kohli needed for scoring 25 centuries in Test cricket. Only Sir Donald Bradman (68) took fewer innings than him for 25 Test tons.
86 – Kohli became the fastest to complete 5000 runs in Test cricket while batting at No.4. He is also the second fastest to the milestone at any batting position.
Kohli betters Kohli:
1223 – Runs Virat aggregated in Test cricket this year thus far. These are the most runs in whites for him in a calendar year surpassing the 1215 runs in 2016. These two are the top in the list of most runs by an Indian captain in a calendar year.
1039 – Kohli has scored 1039 runs in away Test matches in 2018. He became only the 3rd Test captain with over 1000 Test runs away from home in a calendar year. Graeme Smith (1212 runs in 2008) and Bob Simpson (1018 runs in 1964) are the other two captains with 1000+ away Test runs in a year.
Kohli’s four tons outside India this year are also the joint-most away Test tons in a year by a captain alongside Graeme Smith’s four in 2008.
Lighting up venue’s Test debut:
3 – The Perth Stadium is the 3rd venue at which Virat Kohli scored a century at its Test debut. He scored a century in maiden Test of the Holkar Stadium in Indore and Vishakhapatnam. He is the 10th player to hit a century on as many as three different Test venues’ debut.
Among Indians, Sachin Tendulkar and Cheteshwar Pujara are the other players to achieve such a feat. Pujara is the only player in the history to do it at four different venues.
