Virat Kohli had an ordinary year in Test cricket going into the 2nd Test against South Africa scoring only 210 runs across four Tests. But the Indian captain bounced back strongly with his highest Test score of 254*. Kohli bagged 336 balls and struck 33 fours and two sixes in the game hosted by Pune. Kohli shared a 178-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane for 4th wicket and another 225 with Ravindra Jadeja for the 5th wicket to help India declare on 601/5 in their first innings.

All the major stats and records from Virat Kohli’s unbeaten double century against South Africa:

1 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to score 250+ runs in a Test inning. In this process, Kohli broke his own record of the highest Test score by an Indian captain. He scored 243 in the 2017 Delhi Test against Sri Lanka.


2 – Virat became only the 2nd player to score a double century in the 50th Test match as captain. Stephen Fleming scored an unbeaten 274 in his 50th Test against Sri Lanka in 2003.


2 – Virat’s 254* is now the 2nd highest individual Test score by an Indian against South Africa. Virender Sehwag’s 319 in the 2008 Chennai Test is the highest by any Indian against the Proteas.


6 – Kohli has scored double tons against six different oppositions in Test cricket; the joint-most by any player. Kumar Sangakkara and Younis Khan also scored a Test double against six different opponents.


7 – Kohli now has seven double centuries in Test cricket; the most by any Indian surpassing six 200s each by Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. Overall, Kohli is the 6th player with as many as seven 200s in the longer format.


9 – Kohli has managed to convert 19 of his Test centuries as captain into 150+ scores. These are now the most 150+ Test scores as captain for any player surpassing Sir Donald Bradman’s tally of 8. All seven Test centuries by Kohli scored as the Indian captain. No other captain in Test history has more than five Test 200s as captain.


65 – Kohli’s seven double-centuries came in the space of just 65 Test innings. Only Sir Donald Bradman had scored seven double tons in less span. All the 12 doubles by Bradman came across 60 Test innings.


138 – Virat completed 7000 runs in Test cricket when he scored his 200th run of the innings. He needed 138 runs for this milestone; 3rd fastest among Indians. Overall, only three players scored 7000+ Test runs in less than 138 innings.


435 – Kohli needed only 435 innings to complete 21,000 runs in International cricket; the fewest by any player. Sachin Tendulkar was the previous quickest taking 473 innings. In terms of matches taken for 21k International runs, Kohli needed 392 games and thus broke the record held by Brian Lara in 396 matches.


1176 – Virat Kohli’s seven double-centuries came in the space of 1176 days; the shortest time span with as many as seven Test 200s for any player. Don Bradman’s first seven double tons came in the space of 1482 days.
