The leading run-getter of the series Shaun Marsh was stumped off a wide while Usman Khawaja gave him a return catch in the same over. Chahal had figures of 6/42 in the end which helped them restrict the hosts to 230 as he dismissed Marcus Stoinis and Peter Handscomb in a crucial stage of the game.
All the major stats and numbers that Yuzvendra Chahal recorded with his brilliant spell of bowling:
1 – Chahal became the first spinner in ODI history to take a 6-wicket haul in Australia. As many as eight spinners picked a 5-wicket haul in ODIs in Australia before Chahal but none of them converted it to a 6-fer.
1 – He became the first Indian spinner to take two five-fers outside India. He reaped 5/22 against South Africa in an ODI last year. He is the 3rd Indian after Ashish Nehra and Irfan Pathan to have two five-fers away from home in this format and the first with two outside Asia. Both Nehra and Irfan’s 2nd ODI five-fer were in Asia while their first was recorded in Africa.
2 – Chahal is only the 2nd Indian who has more than one 6-wicket haul in Limited Overs Internationals (ODIs and T20Is). Ashish Nehra picked two 6-fers in ODI cricket while the leg-spinner has one each in ODIs and T20Is.
3 – He is only the 3rd spinner to have picked a 6-wicket haul in ODI cricket against Australia. Murali Kartik had figures of 6/27 in the 2007 Mumbai ODI while Shahid Afridi took 6/38 against the Aussies in the 2009 Dubai ODI.
3 – He is also only the 3rd Indian to take a five-fer in ODI cricket in Australia. Ravi Shastri took 5/15 against the hosts in the 1991 Perth ODI while Ajit Agarkar finished with 6/42 against the Aussies in the 2004 Melbourne ODI.
6/42 – Chahal’s bowling figures are joint best by any player in the ODI format on Australian soil. Agarkar also had registered figures of 6/42 against the hosts in 2004 also at the MCG. Overall, Chahal is the 4th bowler after Agarkar, Mitchell Starc (6/43 vs India, 2015) and Chris Woakes (6/45 vs Australia, 2011) to bag an ODI 6-fer in Australia.
9 – He is the 9th bowler and the 5th spinner to bag a 6-wicket haul in ODI cricket for India. Kuldeep Yadav was the last when he picked up 6/25 against England in the Nottingham ODI last year. With that 6-fer, Kuldeep became the first spinner to bag an ODI 6-fer in England.
