Preview

England will take on Australia in the third Test of The Ashes 2023 at Headingley in Leeds on Thursday (July 6). Australia have put up a brilliant performance so far, so they are 2-0 ahead in the series, and Ben Stokes and his team will look to fight back in the series.

Australia won the second Test by 43 runs despite a fighting knock from the English skipper Ben Stokes. Australia posted 416 in the first innings after being asked to bat by England. Steve Smith scored his 32nd Test Hundred and led Australia's foundation. He was dismissed on 110(184) by Josh Tongue. David Warner 66(88) and in-form batter Travis Head 77(73) also played a key role for Australia to reach such a huge total. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue scalped three wickets each, while Joe Root picked up two. Root picked the wickets of Travis Head and Cameron Green in the same over. England's openers gave them a good start until Nathan Lyon, playing his 100th consecutive Test match, gave Australia the first breakthrough. Australia's short ball tactic was successful as England were bundled out for 325 in their first innings. They had contributions from Zak Crawley 48(48), Ben Duckett 98(134), Ollie Pope 42(63) and Harry Brook 50(68). Mitchell Starc scalped three wickets, while Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head picked two wickets each.

Australia had a 91-run lead while starting their second innings. In the second innings, Usman Khawaja stood tall with 77(187) and Australia were bundled out for 279. Injured Nathan Lyon came to bat and added 15 runs with Starc to the total, which made a big difference. England had a target of 371 to win the Test and level up the series 1-1. But they were reduced to 45 for four on day four itself by the Australian bowlers. Mitchell Starc sent back Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope on 3(6) and 3(10), respectively. Australian Skipper Pat Cummins got the crucial wicket of Joe Root on 18(35). They even lost the wicket of Harry Brook on day four only. The opener, Ben Duckett and skipper Ben Stokes stitched a 132-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Duckett fell prey to Josh Hazlewood on the score of 83 off 112. England bizarrely lost Johnny Bairstow's wicket, and they were six down. Ben Stokes still kept fighting from one end and scored a sensational century. At last, he was dismissed for the score of 155 off 214, and England were seven down on the score of 301 with 70 runs more required for the win. The Australian bowlers cleared up the tail quickly, and England were bundled out for 327.
