Preview
Gujarat Giants (GUJ-W) will take on Mumbai Indians Women (MUM-W) in the third match of the Women’s Premier League 2024 on Sunday (February 25) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It will be the first match of the season for the Giants. They finished in last place in 2023 with two wins in eight matches. Mumbai Indians won both matches against the Giants last season.
Mumbai Indians faced Delhi Capitals Women in the season opener this season and elected to bowl after winning the toss. The Capitals posted a total of 171 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Alice Capsey was the highest scorer for the Capitals and made 75 runs off 53 deliveries. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr took two wickets for MI. Mi lost the wicket of Hayley Matthews on a duck on the second delivery of their innings. Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur scored a half-century each for the team but the match went into the last over. MI required 12 runs to win the match in the last over. They lost two wickets and required five runs to win off the last delivery. Sajeevan Sajana hit a six of the last delivery to seal the match for MI. Harmanpreet scored 55 runs off 34 deliveries and won the Player of the Match award.
The Giants had a disastrous outing last season with just two wins in eight matches. Beth Mooney will be back as the captain of the side after missing most of the action last season. The Giants retained only eight players before going into the mini-auction and made some exciting moves at the auction table. They bought Phoebe Litchfield for INR 1 crore and shelled out INR 2 crore for uncapped Indian pacer Kashvee Gautam. The Giants are the only team that can field five overseas players this season as they bought Scottish all-rounder Kathryn Bryce in the auction.
