Preview

Hosts India (IND) and the visitors England (ENG) will head into their final lap of the preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as the two powerhouses are all set to lock horns in the first ODI of the three-match series, slated to take place from Thursday, February 6, at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, in Nagpur. Following the T20I series, the two white-ball heavyweights will be looking to iron out their flaws ahead of the upcoming mega ICC event.

While the Three Lions will be reeling from their 4-1 series defeat against Suryakumar Yadav and his men in the recently concluded T20I leg of the tour, Team India is set to witness a major overhaul as the senior players with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to the 50-over format. After starting a new cycle under the Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, the Men in Blue played just three ODIs in Sri Lanka after their 2024 T20 World Cup win. Team India ended up conceding their first ODI series loss to the Lankan Lions after a huge span of 28 years. On the flip side, Jos Buttler and his men will be aiming to regain some of their lost sheen after their horrendous performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Coming back to the team dynamics, apart from the return of Rohit and Virat, the series will see plenty of stars like Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant. All these players would be looking to get into the 50-over mode. However, it remains to see whether star pacer Mohammed Shami, who staged his comeback after an injury hiatus, gets back to his vintage best. In contrast, the 2019 ODI World Cup champions will have their talismanic batter Joe Root, who is back in the mix and will be looking to provide the stability that the visitors badly missed in the shortest version of the game.

Can Jos Buttler and his team hit back after T20I humbling?

Ever since their 2022 T20 World Cup win, Jos Buttler and his team haven't had the best times in white-ball games, as they were handed an early exit in the 2023 ODI World Cup following a below-par performance in the league stage and crashed out of the semi-finals after losing to Rohit Sharma and his men in the 2024 T20 World Cup. To make matters worse, England's recent matches against Australia and West Indies resulted in crushing series defeats.
