Lancashire will lock horns with Leicestershire in a league match of the Vitality Blast 2023 at the Old Trafford in Manchester on May 25. Lancashire have played one match in this tournament already which they won and are sitting at the second position in the rankings of the North Group. Leicestershire, on the other hand, are yet to play their first game this season and would look forward to winning this match and gaining some early momentum.
Lancashire squared off against Derbyshire in the opening encounter of the tournament where Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat. Derbyshire had a horrible start as they lost Haider Ali on a duck but a solid second wicket partnership brought them back on track. Wayne Madson scored a fantastic fifty and some quickfire runs down the order helped them post a total of 179 runs at the loss of five wickets at the end of the first innings. Lancashire, on the other hand, started brilliantly with an opening partnership of 59 runs. Several batters played well and contributed but Luke Wells was adjudged Player of the Match for his match winning knock of 66 runs. Lancashire won the match by four wickets with four balls to spare.
Leicestershire had a good last season actually but were a little unfortunate. They had won eight matches from their 14 league stage matches and had finished at the sixth position in the standings of North Group. They had done well last season, and just needed to improve a little to qualify for the knockouts. They have added the likes of Naveen ul Haq and a bright young spinner in Rehan Ahmed to solidify their bowling. Naseem Shah has been named cover for Naveen till he is not free from his IPL duties. They have also signed Wiaan Mulder who would add extra pace to their bowling lineup as well as add some runs.
