Under the leadership of Virandeep Singh, Malaysia started off the campaign with a two-run close win over Hong Kong. Batting first, Malaysia posted a dominating total of 277/4 in 50 overs. Sharvin Muniandy smacked a 125-run knock off 129 balls.

In response, Hong Kong fell short of the target by just two runs as they could score only 275/7 in 50 overs. Vijay Unni was the wrecker-in-chief with a three-wicket haul, conceding 36 runs in 10 overs.
