Preview

The New Zealand cricket team will be extremely keen to draw the ODI series when they face hosts Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI of the three-match series slated to take place on November 17 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Mitchell Santner and his men will be gearing up after the previous loss and will aim to win the next game to level up the series. However, Charith Asalanka and Co. would look to thwart the Black Caps to seal the series in the second game itself.

Speaking about the series opener, Sri Lanka top-order batters Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis have smashed magnificent hundreds against new-look visitors as the home team cruised to a 45-run win by DLS-inflicted method in a rain-hit first ODI game. Kusal Mendis struck 143 off 128 balls, while Asitha Fernando hammered 100 off 115 balls to post 324/5 in 49.2 overs before Rain played the spoilsport and reduced the target to 221 off 27 overs.

However, in reply, opening batter Will Young and Tim Robinson combined in an 88-run for the first wicket, but Charith Asalanka and his men derailed New Zealand's chase and restricted them to 175/9, making them lose the opening game miserably despite the good start by debutants.

For the Kiwis, the next game seems to be a great opportunity to regain momentum and test their bench strength ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy. On the flip side, a win in the second ODI game would not only seal the series for the Sri Lankan side but bolster their confidence as they gear up for the tougher assignments in the next few months.
