Preview
On July 12, at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo, the third and final T20I match of the New Zealand Women's tour of Sri Lanka will take place. In this series, spin is in charge, and both sides have let it unleash. The New Zealand Women, who fought well under the spin threat, have emphatically won the away series. To regain their confidence against spin, Sri Lanka will look to pick up a relief victory at home.
Unfortunately, in the first two T20Is on the surface that spins from ball one, Sri Lanka Women (SL-W) were invited to bat. They faced 12 overs of spin from both ends in the opening game and lost six wickets. Although there were 15 overs of spin in the second game, SL batters again toiled against NZ-W, this time against pacer Lea Tahuhu. The team underperformed because the scoring rate was consistently below 6, which led to frequent wicket losses. Their striking rate was significantly impacted by Chamari Athapaththu, their captain, failing at the top.
As they asked the Lankans to bat to exploit their weak spot, the New Zealand Women strategically did well to survive against spin, which led to a low-scoring series win. However, New Zealand Women faced 14 overs of spin in the first game and 12 overs in the second game; they only lost six wickets altogether in the two games, demonstrating their effective response to the Lankan spin attack. To make this series stand out, they might attempt to whitewash the Lankans on their own soil.
