England’s 33-year-old fast bowler Liam Plunkett is set to join switch base to Surry after his contract with Yorkshire expires at the end of this season.

Plunkett, who has played 13 Tests and 73 ODIs for India and took 4 for 46 in the second ODI against India recently, started his career for Durham in 2003 but moved to Yorkshire in 2013. However, his relationship with the club soured recently after the cricketer chose the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the county commitment, something which did not please the club authorities, CricBuzz reported.

Liam Plunkett also had his share of displeasure when he was dropped for a Royal London One-Day Cup game versus Northamptonshire. The bowler did not let it go. “If they want to drop me on that… They said I wasn’t ready, that I looked undercooked. I was disappointed and I let them know,” he was quoted as saying.

Plunkett had a talk with White Rose county about a new deal but revealed later that the club looked reluctant to make an offer which pushed to look elsewhere. Middlesex seemed to be in the hunt for him but eventually, he landed with Surrey for three years.

For Yorkshire, its cricket director Martyn Moxon said they were trying to put together a squad which will have available players and within budget to competes in all domestic competitions and Plunkett did not fit in such scheme of things. He, nevertheless, thanked the local lad Plunkett for playing a part in the club’s recent success and wished him over his future commitments.

In terms of form, however, Plunkett hasn’t disappointed. He is bowling well for England in the limited overs and has taken 54 wickets in 29 matches since the beginning of 2017. Fitness permitting, he looks a certainty in the home team’s squad for next year’s World Cup.

Surrey cricket chief Alec Stewart was optimistic over Plunkett’s inclusion and said it will improve the county’s options in all formats.
