Looking back at the England tour, what did India get?
2. Jayant Yadav:
The off-spinner was picked in the Test squad as the backup spinner and wasn’t even in consideration for a place in the playing XI in the first Test at Rajkot. The three frontline spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra were chosen to play as was expected. But Mishra looked out of sorts and ultimately he was dropped from the team which meant Jayant got the chance to play his first Test at Visakhapatnam.
He picked up 4 wickets in the match and vital contributions with the bat down the order with the scores of 35 and 27 in the first and the second innings respectively. He backed it up with 4 wickets in the next game and 55 runs with the bat. The team had witnessed a useful spinner as well as a gritty batsman who could stay on the crease for long.
He went one step further in the next Test at Mumbai and notched up his maiden hundred. He scored 104 runs batting at number 9 and shared a stand of 241 runs for the 8th wicket with Virat Kohli. He picked up a wicket in the last innings, to sum up, a superb Test match for himself. Unfortunately, he got injured and missed out of the final Test. But India has surely found a handy off-spinner and an able batsman that allows them to go in with only 5 top-order batsmen.
