West Indies’ newly appointed limited overs captain Nicholas Pooran will have a big challenge coming up at home against India and he is quite dedicated to leading from the front. The three-match ODI series starts on the 22nd of July and will go on until the 27th of July. The ODIs will be followed by a five-match T20I series and both teams will be looking to try out different combinations with the T20 World Cup 2022 scheduled in October this year.
Pooran was named the full-time captain of West Indies in the limited overs setup once Kieron Pollard retired from international cricket earlier this year in April. The Caribbean nation lost to Bangladesh 0-3 at home recently in the ODIs but managed to win the T20I series 2-0 on the back of brilliant performances from the skipper Pooran. On the other hand, India haven’t lost a T20I series for a long time and Pooran will know the importance of making a big statement.
We will look to put our best foot forward: Nicholas Pooran
Pooran mentioned the advantage that the India team has with the number of quality players and felt that challenging them will certainly send a message throughout the world. He also weighed in that a good performance will boost their confidence ahead of a global tournament coming up. He went on to add about creating a template and the mindset for the ODI format as they are yet to find the best combination.
“They have millions of players who can come and do that role. They have match-winners with bat and ball and we can come out and challenge them here and Florida, it will send a message across the cricket world. And it will be fabulous for us as a group as well,” Pooran told the TOI.
“We are trying to find out the right mindset for ODI cricket. Once we get that, we will be fine, but now it’s about forming a template for each format. We are looking forward to the series and our aim is to be competitive and play exciting cricket. We will look to put our best foot forward,” he added.
