The New Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad has become quite an intriguing topic of discussion amongst the cricket fraternity. It has been confirmed that this cricket stadium will be the largest of all time in terms of seats, beating even the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which holds 1,00,024 people in it.
The Gujarat Cricket Association owned stadium was previously inaugurated in 1982 with a capacity of 49,000 and was demolished to make it bigger and equipped with modern facilities. The capacity has been increased to 1,10,000 plus and covers an area of 63 acres. The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) is preparing 11 pitches with both red and black soil — they will either be bouncy, spin-friendly or a mix of both.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly excited about seeing the new stadium
Current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is excited to see the newly built stadium and shared his excitement on Twitter. Ganguly played his early years of cricket in the Eden Gardens which used to have a capacity of 1,00,000 plus from 1987-2011; after which it was revamped and the capacity was capped at 66,000. It was established in 1864.
The BCCI’s official Twitter handle had shared aerial images of the newly built Motera Stadium, which will be inaugurated by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump on his upcoming visit to India. The BCCI had posted on Twitter, “The Sun is out! #MoteraStadium Ahmedabad, India”
To this, the BCCI President responded to the tweet, barely concealing his excitement to seeing the brand-new cricket ground. “Lovely to see such a massive, pretty stadium .. Ahmedabad .. have great memories in this ground as a player, captain ..grew up at Eden with hundred thousand capacity .. (not any more).. can’t wait to see this on 24th,” he tweeted.
