Asian subcontinent is all set to welcome another edition of the Asia Cup as the tournament will begin on August 31 in Pakistan. After a few games on Pakistan soil, the tournament will then shift to Sri Lanka for the remainder of the season, including the big final. Notably, the most successful team in the tournament, India will play all their matches in Sri Lanka as they are in the same group as Pakistan and Nepal. Group B meanwhile comprises Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
Coming to the history of the tournament, batters have always dominated in the sub-continent as Virat Kohli’s 183 against arch-rivals Pakistan, Shahid Afridi’s blistering knock of 124 runs against Bangladesh in 2010, and Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara’s 201-run partnership against Bangladesh in 2008 are few examples when batters wreaked havoc in the biggest stage. However, there are multiple examples when things didn’t go in their favour at all.
Sri Lanka's performance in the Asia Cup 2023 final is the latest entrant in the list for lowest score in Asia Cup history, they have been bowled out for 50 runs inside 16 overs courtesy of stellar bowling performance from Mohammed Siraj. He bowled brilliantly ending his spell at 6/21 in his seven overs.Kusal Mendis (17) and Dushan Hemantha (13*) were the batters to cross double digit mark.
Sri Lanka getting bowled out for only 96 runs against India in the 1984 Asia Cup is one of the most humiliating performances by the Lankan Lions in the history of the competition. 32 years later, Pakistan faced the wrath of Indian bowlers, when the MS Dhoni-led side bundled their neighbors for only 83 runs. Among the lower-ranked teams, Hong Kong registered the most humiliating defeat in the history of the competition when they posted only 38 runs in the 2022 Asia Cup.
Bangladesh too have many humiliating performances to their name as they scored only 94 against Pakistan in the 1986 Asia Cup while in 1988, the Bangla Tigers posted only 99 runs against India on their home turf. Thus, batters too have struggled to get going from time to time and all the teams will now hope not to repeat the same, and get better in order to entertain the fans with more classic performances.
