The advent of cash-rich franchise cricket has ensured that modern-day cricketers have their hands full while playing at the highest level. But in contrast, several stars of the yesteryears are struggling to make ends meet, with former Indian cricket Vinod Kambli being the latest addition. But in the latest heartwarming news, a businessman from Maharashtra has come forward with a lucrative job offer for the southpaw.
Vinod Kambli made his debut for the Indian team more than three decades ago and was considered the next big thing in Indian cricket after he had scored 793 runs in his first seven outings in red-ball cricket, averaging an astonishing 113.29 with two double centuries in his first four matches.
Although Kambli went on to play for the Men in Blues in over 100 ODIs, he never delivered on his initial promise and dwindled into oblivion since the turn of the century. The flamboyant cricketer came out seeking cricketing assignments in a recent interview, highlighting his dire financial condition post-retirement.
The stylish stroke makers’ plea did not go unheard as a Marathi businessman has come forward to the aid of the former Indian international, with a reported job offer in the finance division of Sahyadri Industry Group in Mumbai with a monthly salary of Rs 1 lakh. The 50-year-old is yet to respond to this latest offer.
If you want to stay steady in life, it is important to have assignments: Vinod Kambli
Kambli’s last cricketing assignment came in 2019 when he coached a team in the T20 Mumbai League, guiding young and upcoming cricketers at the Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy in Nerul. He highlighted his plight post his playing career and thanked the BCCI for their monthly pension, which helps take care of his family.
“I am a retired cricketer who is completely dependent on the pension from the BCCI. My only payment [source of income] at the moment is from the Board, for which I am really thankful and grateful. It takes care of my family. After retirement, there is no cricket for you. But if you want to stay steady in life, it is important to have assignments. I am looking for that from the MCA,” Kambli had revealed in the latest interview with Mid-day.
