Mahela Jayawardene appointed coach of the Khulna Titans for two BPL seasons
BPL has also changed the overseas players' rule for the upcoming season of the tournament.
After his success with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League where the team lifted their third title in the 2017 edition of the tournament under the new coach Mahela Jayawardene. Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) team Khulna Titans have now decided to rope in the former Sri Lankan captain as the coach for the coming two seasons of the BPL.
Earlier Mahela has featured in the tournament as a player when he featured for the eventual champion team Dhaka Dynamites in the previous edition of the BPL. The Titans team is all excited to have the legend as the coach and that has a lot to do with his recent stint at MI.
“We are excited to have Mahela Jayawardene join the Titans as head coach for the next two editions of BPL,” Kazi Inam Ahmed, the managing director of Khulna was quoted as saying by Wisden India. “We were thrilled to see him win the IPL recently as the coach of the Mumbai Indians. I am sure all of us at Titans will learn a lot from him and the tournament will be enriched by his presence.”
Enjoyed playing BPL
The team was earlier commanded by former Australian batsman Stuart Law who has now taken over as the head coach of the struggling West Indies team. BPL season 5 will kick off on November 4 and will be an 8-team tournament.
“I enjoyed playing in the BPL last year and that has given me a great insight into what will be required to be successful in the 2017 tournament,” said Jayawardene.
There is a change in the overseas players’ term as 5 players will now be allowed to be included in the playing XI while in the past it was at par with the IPL and only permitted 4 overseas players.
BPL secretary Ismail Haider said, “Since BPL is telecast in different parts of the world, we have to think about the spectators and they want to see number of quality overseas players in the league,”
