Mahela Jayawardene backs Lasith Malinga after the latter's punishment
Lasith Malinga had to face he consequence as he compared the Sports minister to a monkey after the latter’s remark on the Sri Lankan cricketers following their Champions Trophy campaign.
Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene came in support of former teammate Lasith Malinga on Twitter. The elegant right-hander replied to a fan’s tweet in favour of Malinga showing complete agreement.
Lasith Malinga was subjected to a 6-month suspended ban by the Sri Lankan cricket board after the slinger publicly insulted the country’s Sports Minister. Malinga’s comments were a reply to the Sports Minister who termed the Sri Lankan cricketers as an unfit bunch of players after their disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy. In other words, the minister said that the country’s cricketers were too fat to perform well.
Following the punishment, a fan came up with a tweet backing Malinga, where she tagged Mahela Jayawardene. Her tweet highlighted the fact that the Sports Minister enjoys the freedom of disrespecting the cricketers but a cricketer faces the music on doing the same.
The tweet read “the sports minister is allowed to riddicule the players but if a player comments they get a 6 month suspension?! SLC @ its worst”
Jayawardene, who is an example of calmness and class, replied to the tweet writing “can’t agree more”.
Malinga’s comments:
Lasith Malinga had to face he consequence as he compared the Sports minister to a monkey after the latter’s remark on the Sri Lankan cricketers following their Champions Trophy campaign. Malinga told a television channel that the sports minister knew nothing about cricket. “I don’t care about criticism from those who are simply warming chairs,” he said. “What does a monkey know about a parrot’s nesting hollow? This is like a monkey getting into a parrot’s nest and talking about it.”
Malinga was charged with a 1 year ban but was later brought down to 6 months. The curly haired Sri Lankan will also have to give away 50% of his next ODI fee.
