Mahi bhai saved me from getting dropped a few times: Ishant Sharma
Ishant is still hopeful of staking a claim in the World Cup 2019 squad.
MS Dhoni is one of those leaders who is known to back his players to the core. Once he feels that a player is capable enough, he is sure to give him a long run. Despite the inconsistencies and failures, he trusts his players and saved many from fading away when he was the skipper of the Indian team. Test pacer Ishant Sharma recently said that the former skipper saved him from being dropped on a few instances.
Ishant is now the leader of the Indian pace attack in Test cricket and Mahendra Singh Dhoni will have to be credited for the pacer’s evolution. In an interview, the Delhi Capitals pacer Ishant further gave many insights into various aspects of his game. He said that he is working hard to perform well and pick wickets regularly.
As a senior member, you have to do it for the team
The pacer mentioned that Virat Kohli looks up to him in difficult situations and pushes him to go the extra mile for the team. “Mahi bhai saved me from getting dropped a few times. He backed me a lot. Yes, now being the senior member of the team Virat comes up to me and says ‘I know you are tired and fatigued, but as a senior member you have to do it for the team’,” Ishant was quoted as saying on India Today.
“Earlier, I was just looking to bowl well but now I am looking to perform and want to take wickets. Only wickets can change perception,” he added.
Ishant also said that the perception of him being a Test bowler has a big role to play in him not being in the limited-overs set-up. However, he is hopeful of staking a claim in the World Cup 2019 squad.
“Yes, perception is a big part that players have been dealing with. I don’t know from where this comes from, I don’t think about too many things. I just take it as an opportunity. And if I do well, I will be in a position to stake a claim in the World Cup squad,” he said.
The Delhi cricketer said that he didn’t speak to anyone about not finding a place in the limited-overs team. He added that he is usually very harsh on himself. He pointed out that he takes the entire blame on him about not being picked in white-ball cricket.
