Mahmudullah topples Sachin Tendulkar in opening Test against New Zealand
The right-hander scored a superlative ton in the second innings of the Hamilton Test.
After getting whitewashed 3-0 in the ODI series, Bangladesh also lost the opening Test at the Seddon Park in Hamilton by an innings and 52 runs. There were as many as three centurions from the visiting team’s perspective- Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah. However, the bowling ended up conceding 715 runs in the first innings after which the Tigers couldn’t make a comeback.
The game ended on the fourth day itself. Mahmudullah Riyad was in charge of the team in the absence of the experienced Shakib Al Hasan, who was ruled out due to a finger injury prior to the One Day series. From a personal viewpoint, the all-rounder had a memorable match as he racked up a stupendous knock of 146 runs from 229 deliveries with the help of 21 fours and three over-boundaries.
Mahmudullah at the helm
He shared a partnership of 235 runs with Soumya Sarkar, who contributed with 149 runs. In the meantime, the 33-year-old had more reasons to cheer as he went past the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in terms of runs scored in Hamilton. Mahmudullah currently boasts of 464 runs in six innings at the venue at an incredible average of 92. The former Indian batsman is now second on the list with 441 runs at 55.12.
Third on the list is Rahul Dravid, who notched 427 runs in nine innings. As far as Mahmudullah is concerned, he has four centuries against the Black Caps. Coincidentally, all his three tons against the Black Caps in New Zealand came at the Seddon Park itself. Back in February 2010, the Mymensingh-born scored an incredible 115 from 157 balls in the first innings of the game.
The other ton in Hamilton came in the 2015 World Cup, where he turned up with a well-compiled knock of 128 runs from 123 balls, batting at number four. Unfortunately, all his three tons in Hamilton came in losing causes. Mahmudullah also has a ton against the Kiwis in Cardiff during the 2017 Champions Trophy. He scored 102 not out and took Bangladesh to a victory by five wickets.
