Majority of the owners rejected the idea of IPL auctions shifting abroad
IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla said that a majority of the teams want retention.
The IPL governing council meeting was conducted in the national capital New Delhi and the owners and the BCCI officials had a lot to discuss. From discussions on retention policy to shifting the auction to England, there were a lot of facets that went under the hammer and gave the governing council a lot to think about. Though the IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla didn’t reveal much information, few sources had a lot of interesting things to say.
Firstly, a proposal was made to conduct the auction out of India. All the auctions thus far were conducted in Bangalore and considering this auction is going to be a lot bigger, a few teams wanted England to be the destination. But that is not going to happen as only two teams were in favor of the argument whilst most of them were against it.
Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals apparently wanted the retention policy to end and all the players should be in the auction. But the other six teams disapproved this proposal and requested an option to retain a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 players including the right to match card. The salary cap will also be raised from Rs 60 crore to Rs 75 crore.
Details will be finalized in a fortnight: Shukla
The chairman of the governing council Rajeev Shukla addressed the press after the meeting. He preferred to remain silent regarding the changes that will be made this time around, but he has confirmed that all the details will be out in a fortnight. He also said that a majority of the teams want retention and this probably might mean the teams will be allowed to retain a certain amount of players.
“The meeting went off well. The idea was to invite actual team owners and solicit their views now that 10 years have concluded. Lot of things like retention, salary cap, squad strength were discussed. Majority of the owners want player retention. I think we will be able to finalize the details in a fortnight,” Shukla said.
An official informed about the representatives of each team. “The meeting was well attended. Delhi Daredevils owner GM Rao, Mumbai Indians‘ Akash Ambani, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Shah Rukh Khan and Jay Mehta, Kings XI Punjab’s Mohit Burman and Ness Wadia were present. Rajasthan Royals was represented by Manoj Badale while CSK’s representative John George,” the official informed.
