'Make Kohli earn every run' - Jason Gillespie advises Australia
He also shared tips that could help the Australian bowlers against the Indian superstar.
The India-Australia has been one of the most intense and intriguing rivalries in cricket of all time. The upcoming Test series promises to be nothing less than that. The series is slightly inclined in the visitors’ favour for the first time, given their batting prowess and their bowling attack which has massively improved. Yet another former Australian cricketer in Jason Gillespie has swooped in to give his inputs on tackling the run-machine Virat Kohli for his national side.
Kohli has been in golden touch in the current year and averages over 55 in his 73-Test career. The 30-year old will arguably be the most important wicket for the hosts in the four-match series. Gillespie pointed out that the Indian skipper cannot be given easy runs and Australia must make him earn every run.
The South-Australian speedster also stressed that it is important that the Australian bowlers must apply the squeeze early on since if the Indian captain gets going, it will be hard to stop him. He also said that the bowlers need to be disciplined against him, not giving him any freebies.
There can be no warm-up deliveries against Kohli
“You need to be switched on from ball one. Because if Kohli has faced 20-odd balls and has got more than 10-15 runs, he usually gets a significant score. And that is why it is so crucial to impact early. There can be no warm-up deliveries against him,” he was quoted by ESPNCricinfo
“Don’t allow him to get goint by giving him any an easy shot – a half volley, a tuck off the hip, and a cut shot. If he is going to score runs, make him earn those runs, make him play really good shots, and make him take the risk,” the 43-year-old further added.
Kohli meantime remains unfazed by a fairly considerable challenge that lies ahead. He made it clear that he has got nothing to prove to anyone and is determined to give cent per cent on the field. The Delhi batsman also said that he doesn’t feel anything different while playing in other countries.
The two sides square off against each other at Adelaide on December 6th in the series opener.
