Ravi Shastri, the former Indian cricketer, turned 58 years old on Wednesday, May 27. The retired all-rounder was a bedrock of the national team during his playing days. He was a fearless character and never shied away from expressing his opinions. His career spanned 11 years from 1981 to 1992. During his while, he managed 6,900 runs and picked up as many as 280 wickets.
He retired after India’s away series against South Africa on February 1992. After he retired, he became a well-known commentator. He also had the privilege of commentating during India’s victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup Final and the 2011 World Cup in India. He described the six MS Dhoni hit off Nuwan Kulasekera to take the Men in Blue over the finishing line.
During the 2015 World Cup, he served as the manager of the Indian team. In 2017, he became the head coach of the Indian side. It was after Anil Kumble stepped down from his position after an ugly feud with skipper Virat Kohli. Last year, Shastri was retained as the head coach by the Cricket Advisory Committee, headed by Kapil Dev, the 1983 World Cup winning Indian captain.
In fact, Shastri was a member of the very team that beat the West Indies in the final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Shastri has helped Indian garner loads of laurels in his journey. On his birthday, he was greeted with loads of praises from the cricket fraternity. Even Kohli wished his national coach on the auspicious occasion. He called Shastri as a brave individual.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Many seem confident but only few are brave. Happy birthday Ravi bhai. God bless #throwback,”
