Marcus Trescothick scores 50th first-class century for Somerset
The left-hander who has the most FC runs for Somerset will now be eyeing to be the highest run-getter for Somerset having scored 18533 runs.
Even after 11 years of retirement from the International cricket, England’s legendary batsman, Marcus Trescothick continues to set records battling out in the County Championship. Playing against the Warwickshire at the Taunton county ground, the Somerset opening batsman first completed 25,000 runs in his first-class career and later on hit the 50th first-class ton for his domestic side.
Thus, Trescothick became the first player to score 50 centuries in first-class cricket for the Somerset. Harold Gimblett held the record for 49 centuries in first-class cricket while playing for Somerset. On the final day of the championship game, Trescothick struck 106 in 199 balls with help of 11 fours in his side’s reply to Warwickshire’s 413.
The 41-year old fell to debutant Thornton caught behind while his side’s score read 208/6 after this they were packed up for just 230 and the visiting side enforced the follow-on. Somerset were 86/1 in their 2nd innings before the game ended in a draw with Trescothick remaining unbeaten on 46 facing 86 balls striking 6 fours and a six.
The record
Earlier on day 3, Trescothick extended his first-class cricket tally to 25,000 runs with a boundary off Barker when he was batting on 27. He became the 127th player to reach the 25k milestone in this format.
Trescothick has been a consistent performer over the years even after giving up on a successful International career. During the 2016 season, Trescothick struck 1353 runs in 29 innings at a healthy average of 52.03 which includes 5 centuries.
The left-hander who has the most FC centuries for Somerset will now be eyeing to be the highest run-getter for Somerset having scored 18533 runs for them and still 2609 runs behind Harold Gimblett, the highest FC run-scorer for the Somerset so far. Given the way Trescothick has been scoring at least 1100 runs in the previous 3 English seasons, the southpaw might achieve the feat by end of 2018.
