Mark Ramprakash sacked as England batting coach
England’s head coach Trevor Bayliss is also set to step down from his position in September.
During his playing days, Mark Ramprakash remained one of England’s best-known ‘who could have’ cricketers. The former Surrey batsman who also played for Middlesex was often hailed for his sound technique but he could not live up to the potential in international cricket – playing 52 Tests and 18 ODIs in an international career spanning over a decade. The 49-year-old is now set to leave his job as England’s batting coach amid reports that another former England batsman Graham Thorpe is ready to take over for the Ashes later this year at home.
Ramprakash, who was a more established name in the longer format with 2,350 runs and two hundreds, had been working with England since 2014 while Thorpe, a former southpaw, engaged with the ODI set-up. It was reported that Ramprakash had a contract till the end of the forthcoming season but was ousted following the arrival of Ashley Giles as the new director of England men’s cricket in January. The former cricketer, whose last stint with England coaching was the Test series against the Windies that the Three Lions lost 1-2, tweeted about the development on Friday.
He said it was a huge privilege for him to support the team for five years and wished it luck for the future. ECB spokesperson said: “We will finalise the coaching set-up for the Ashes in the next couple of weeks. Mark Ramprakash will not be part of the coaching set-up for the Ashes.”
England head coach will also step down this September
England’s head coach Trevor Bayliss is also set to step down from his position in September. England, who saw a big slump in their Test ranking (from second to fifth) recently after the series loss to the Windies, will play a five-Test series against Australia at home between August 1 and September 16.
England will play South Africa in the first match of the World Cup against South Africa at the Oval on May 30.
