Australia didn’t have the best of Test series against India as they lost it 1-2. They weren’t the favourites coming into the series as they were International Cricket Council’s (ICC) number-five ranked Test team even as India, captained by the enigmatic Virat Kohli, were placed at the top of the rankings. The hosts also didn’t have the services of two of their veterans, Steve Smith and David Warner.
In the first match at the Adelaide Oval, the visitors won by 31 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series. The Aussies found themselves in the driver’s seat in quite a few instances, but couldn’t cross the finishing line. Nevertheless, they came back to win the second Test at the new Perth Stadium by 146 runs. Most importantly, Tim Paine and Co managed to draw level in the series.
Waugh slams Vaughan
Unfortunately, they couldn’t survive the venom spewed by the Indians at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and lost by 137 runs as India took an unassailable lead in the series. The fourth and final contest at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) didn’t produce any result as rain played spoilsport in the last couple of day after Virat’s men scored a mammoth 622 in the first innings.
In the meantime, Michael Vaughan, the former English cricketer said that the return of David Warner and Steve Smith, both of whom are currently serving a year-old ban from Cricket Australia (CA), won’t solve all the issues of Australian cricket. However, former Aussie great Mark Waugh disagrees with him and said that the absence of two main batsmen can make a huge difference.
The retired cricketer took to Twitter and wrote, “I’m not so sure about that Mr.Vaughan. Assuming Warner and Smith get back to somewhere near there best I’m suggesting they will make a huge difference. You take the 2 best batsmen out of any cricket team in the world and see what happens or even 1. Kohli, Root, Williamson etc,”
