30-year old Martin Guptill made a name for himself on the day with some incredible batting as he went ahead and ensured that he helped himself to an impressive 61. While this is certainly a step in the right direction as far as the Kiwis are concerned, it would definitely witness the selectors take a quick call on whether or not the 30-year old deserves a recall into the Test squad.
Speaking about the same, Guptill went on to add that he was indeed asking himself the same question. Yes, he did indeed have a poor tour of India with the bat, but the fact was that he was replaced by the impressive Jeet Raval who has been more than an adequate replacement for “I ask myself the same question all the time,” Guptill told Radio Sport’s, Martin Devlin. “Just why? Why isn’t it working?
However, he went ahead and stated that he did enjoy playing for Auckland and hoped that he could play for Auckland in the future. “But I enjoy coming back to play for Auckland, and hopefully I can score a couple more hundreds before the season’s end and put some pressure on the get back into the test team.”
Guptill then went on to state that he had indeed spoken to Mike Hesson about playing in the white-shirt as well. Moreover, he also spoke about the Plunket Shield, something he’d be eyeing in the future. “I’d like to bat anywhere in the order. I’ve had a few conversations with ‘Hess’ about where I want to bat, and we’ll have a little play around when the Plunket Shield starts up again and see what happens there.”
