The English County Club, Somerset’s Director of Cricket Matt Maynard has decided to leave the club after the end of the domestic season. The decision came after a review was conducted to inspect the existing structure of the Somerset County Cricket Club. The inspection revealed that there are many limitations in the present structure and there should be different roles of Director of Cricket and that of the Head Coach. Now as a part of the development, the club will soon announce a new director of cricket and head coach.

Somerset has not had a great time in this year’s county season when compared to their previous performance where they were pretty close to winning the County Championship title. The CEO, Lee Cooper also admitted that the present system has a lot of bugs which is leading to ineffectiveness. However, the club’s statement revealed that the decision has been made to separate the roles of the director and the head coach.

“Somerset County Cricket Club’s annual Cricket Review was recently completed in order to fully understand the effectiveness of the existing cricket structure. This review identified shortcomings within the structure, and in particular the limitations presented by having one individual combining the dual roles of Director of Cricket and Head Coach. The decision has therefore been taken to separate these two roles, and this change will see Matt Maynard’s amicable departure from the Club,” said the club in a statement.

Existing structure is not effective

CEO Cooper termed that the present structure of the county as ineffective and also acknowledged that changes should be enforced.

“Following this comprehensive review of our cricket structure, it has become very clear that the existing structure is not as effective as it needs to be. The role of Director of Cricket is very different to that of Head Coach and we have recognized this and it’s for this reason we’re making the change. With a change of structure comes a change of personnel and we are parting company with Matt on very amicable terms. He has worked tremendously hard for Somerset County Cricket Club during his tenure and we unreservedly thank him for his contribution,” said Cooper.

“During Matt’s time with the Club we have seen the emergence of several high quality young players and his commitment to the cause has been absolute. I have no doubt that we will see him back in the game again soon and everyone associated with the Club wishes Matt and his family the very best for the future,” he added.

Success is not too far away

Maynard gave his word of thanks and blessings to all the members and players of the club on his departure. “It will be with a heavy heart when I leave this unique cricket club after the End of Season Dinner.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years in Taunton and would like to thank all the players, support staff, committee and Members for their support during my tenure,” he said.

“We came so close to securing the Holy Grail last season, but it was not to be. With the enormously talented young players at the Club, along with the quality senior players, I’m sure success and silverware will come in the not too distant future,” concluded Maynard.
