Twitterati have gone berserk as Shardul Thakur replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar in India’s line-up for the T20 World Cup 2021 clash against New Zealand. The decision was highly anticipated as Bhuvneshwar has been out of touch since a while. Moreover, Shardul Thakur enjoyed a sensational run in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Hence, the decision was pretty much on the cards.

It has to be noted that Shardul wasn’t a part of India’s initially-announced squad for the global competition. He was instead named among the reserve players. However, some exceptional spells in IPL 2021 made selectors replace him with all-rounder Axar Patel in the squad. Hence, it would be interesting to see how he performs at the big stage.

India are coming off a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Pakistan. While many things didn’t go India’s way in the game, their bowlers let them down the most. As a result, Pakistan openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan chased down 152 without losing any wicket. Some changes in India’s bowling attack were pretty much certain after such defeat.

Can Shardul Thakur deliver on the big stage?

Subsequently, we saw Shardul coming in with Bhuvneswar facing the axe. As Virat Kohli confirmed the big news, social media went berserk and celebrated ‘Lord’ Shardul Thakur’s entry in the line-up. Notably, the pacer has been phenomenal lately. While he has been among the runs, his batting blitzes has also helped India in Test matches this year. Moreover, many believed Thakur is good enough to play as a proper all-rounder.

Meanwhile, skipper Virat Kohli, during the toss session, said his players are itching to take the field after such a long break. “It’s ridiculous, we are playing twice in 10 days. Too long a break, but yeah, the guys have recovered well. Had good practice sessions, are itching to go out on the field, which is a good thing. When you have so many days off you want to get on the park and get into the groove,” said Kohli.

“It’s another opportunity to come out and correct the mistakes. Two changes. One forced, Surya has a lower back spasm, so Ishan Kishan will replace him and open the batting. Shardul Thakur replaces Bhuvneshwar Kumar,” he added.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to Shardul Thakur’s selection in the line-up:
